Steering and Suspension

Steering and Suspension being two of the major safety items on a car and are always high priority on any of our service checks.

With the condition of our roads the suspension sustains high stresses causing premature wear, causing clonks and rattles, poor handling and tyre wear.

A common part that fails is the ball joint dust boot, as well as causing grease to be lost from the joint and risk of foreign bodies to get into the joint and can also fail on the MOT test.

Clutches

The clutch is a vital component of any motor vehicle. Unfortunately, problems with the clutch are often sudden and without warning. Most vehicles will need the clutch repaired or replaced at some point in time. If you believe your clutch may need repairing or replacing you should have this checked immediately, clutch failure will often result in the vehicle not driving.

Having your clutch checked as soon as you notice a problem will save you time, money and inconvenience. As the clutch wears, it can slip, causing the drive from the engine not to transmit to the wheels and reducing motion. Other signs to look out for are:

  • Clutch makes noises when engaging and disengaging.
  • Clutch makes noises when you accelerate.
  • Clutch pedal pulsates against your foot.
  • Clutch pedal remains stuck to the floor.
  • Clutch pedal feels loose or spongey.
  • Hard to engage or disengage gears.

If you have any concerns about the clutch contact us for a free check and advice.

Brakes

If you have any concerns about your vehicle’s braking system, why not book in for a check. We are equipped with the specialist tools and expert knowledge to inspect this part of your car to determine the condition of the components and establish if you need a brake repair or replacement.

Like all vehicle components, the braking system and its performance can deteriorate over time. This can happen gradually, and many motorists may not even realize anything is wrong. Book in for a brake check you could find that it saves you a significant amount of time and money by preventing further damage to other components of your vehicle.

There are a number of tell-tale signs that there could be something wrong with your brakes. You should book your vehicle in for an inspection if you notice the brakes are noisier than usual as there may be a problem. If your vehicle pulls to the left or the right when you apply the brakes or you get a soft, spongy-feeling brake pedal, then you need to get them checked.

If your car shows any of these signs, you should arrange a brake check. We will tell you everything you need to know about your brakes and your SAFETY along with a no obligation value for money quotation.

Exhaust, Catalytic Converters, Diesel Particulate Filters

Exhaust systems are made up of complex parts designed to protect the safety of the vehicle’s occupants, ensuring that they do not become exposed to harmful exhaust gases.

The exhaust system along with the catalytic converter also protects the environment from the same harmful gases.

To ensure your safety and that of the environment, book in for a check.

Exhaust System

While the only visible part of a car’s exhaust system is usually the tailpipe, it is actually much more extensive than that. A complex series of pipes and chambers underneath the main body of your vehicle often makes it difficult to visually notice potential problems. Although most exhaust problems can be diagnosed by listening out for unfamiliar sounds, other signs include rusting and smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. Exhaust damage can occur when driving over speed bumps or low kerbs as the exhaust system is usually the lowest part of the vehicle and may scrape on the ground.

Catalytic Converters

The catalytic converter or “Cat” is a mechanical device which is generally fitted to the vehicle's exhaust system. It reduces the harmful emissions created in the engine from the petrol being burnt prior to the gases passing through the exhaust system and entering the atmosphere. The main purpose of a catalytic converter is to reduce the harmful exhaust emissions.

The Cat reduces the harmful exhaust gases through a chemical reaction. It reacts with the harmful pollutants in the exhaust gases and turns them into less harmful gases. The catalytic converter consists of a special catalyst. The catalyst housing consists of a honeycomb core which is coated with precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium which create the chemical reactions with the engine’s exhaust gases. They reduce the toxic contents of the gases and turn them into carbon dioxide and water. This is all designed to protect the environment.

Diesel Particulate Filters

If you own a diesel car, you probably have a diesel particulate filter. However, you may not know exactly what this is or how to maintain it.

Diesel particulate filters have been fitted to diesel fuel cars for almost two decades now - but if not maintained, or if tampered with there could be serious consequences for your car and the environment.

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars.

But because they only have a finite capacity, this trapped soot periodically has to be emptied or 'burned off' to regenerate the DPF.

This regeneration process cleanly burns off the excess soot deposited in the filter, reducing the harmful exhaust emission and helps to prevent the tell-tale black smoke you used to see from diesel vehicles, particularly when accelerating.

Legislation introduced in 2009 to help lower car CO2 emissions effectively made DPFs mandatory on most diesel cars, vans and lorries

Batteries

The car battery is the source of all electrical power for your car. One of its main purposes is to store power for starting the engine. Batteries tend to let you down without much notice and there is nothing more inconvenient than your car not starting on a busy school or work day.

Your battery is most susceptible to failure in cold weather. If you notice any difficulty with starting during the winter months make sure to have your battery checked

Almost every motorist will experience a flat battery or a car that refuses to start at some point in their lives, leaving them at best late for work, or at worst stranded at the side of the road. The battery provides the power needed to run your car's electrical systems, as well as the power needed to get the car started in the first place.

With a little bit of car battery maintenance and some TLC, you can prolong the life of your car battery and keep it in tip-top condition, saving you time and money in the long run. If a battery does require replacement it is essential that the correct battery is fitted. On some later model vehicles, the battery will need to be fitted and coded to ensure that the battery and charging system will work correctly. Here is our list of the most common car battery problems.

Electrical equipment being left on without the engine running

Leaving the lights or another electrically powered component is the most common cause of discharging the battery. This is normally discovered the next time you try to start your vehicle. We know how inconvenient and infuriating this can be.

Cold weather

Freezing temperatures and batteries aren't the best of friends. Cold weather has a negative effect on the chemical reaction that takes place within batteries, which makes charging slower and can affect the initial reaction needed to get the engine started. If your batter goes flat due to the cold weather, most of the time the battery will need to be replaced.

Excessive loading

If your vehicle's battery power is in constant use or you regularly run things like travel DVD players or mini fridges from your car on weekends away, then you could be putting your car battery through excessive strain.

Corrosion or loose connections

If your car's battery isn't connected properly, then you could be in danger of not only damaging your battery, but also the car itself.

Frequent short journeys/stop-start driving

Constantly turning off and then restarting your engine is an easy way to reduce its effectiveness over time. The extra strain of drawing up power to turn the engine over multiple times within a short period of time can shorten your battery's lifespan.

Alternator problems

The alternator charges your battery whilst the engine is running; if the alternator develops a fault this will have a major impact on the battery.

We have all the latest diagnostic equipment to replace any battery efficiently and professionally, always remaining aware of all health and safety procedures.
